HOME-SCHOOL TO SIXTH FORM UPDATE

I have officially now finished my first year exams at college. The transition from home-education to college has no doubt been a whirlwind. However, it's not quite as dramatic as you might think. So far I have really enjoyed the chance to entertain this new experience. Although I am enjoying a week off whilst I can!

I really enjoy seeing people everyday - an idea which, although normal for most, is crazy for me. I also like spending time doing subjects I enjoy with people who have a passion for them. It took a few days to adjust to the idea of being set homework by people other than my Mum, or even myself for that matter. If most people have an issue with accidentally calling their teacher 'Mum' can you imagine how I feel?

I personally would like to think I'm not sheltered. However, I'll admit coming from my home-educated background, it was inevitable that I would get a slight culture shock once I rocked up at the college gates. I had expected school was going to be different to how I had imagine it (in good and bad ways) and, contrary to many people's beliefs, I had being well socialised for many years by attending regular youth groups and camps, so I wasn't completely stepping into the unknown. However, saying that, there was a little bit of settling in needed as most people are used to the format of sitting in lessons with other people.

the [teachers] made sure I felt treated the same as everyone else ... and I found it very easy to get to know people early on.

For the first few days of college, the teachers were very supportive and made sure I knew where to find help if I needed it, they also made sure I felt treated the same as everyone else as well and I found it very easy to get to know people early on. Something I didn't expect was the relaxed responses of my peers when I explained I was home-educated. This permitted a well-deserved sigh of relief from me as I have become accustomed to the length-y conversations with ordinary schoolers, curious to know about my 'unusual life'.

Overall college is fabulous and although I have the odd day where I grumble about the amount of work or getting up early, I really enjoy the challenge and experience it throws my way.

Let me know down below an time when you've experienced a transition in your life.
